Audition Rotations

graduation education

Trinity Health Livonia Hospital is located in Livonia, Michigan. The psychiatry department offers many unique opportunities for medical student auditioners. Our department includes a 30-bed mental health unit, a psychiatric emergency department, electroconvulsive therapy services, a psychiatry consult liaison service, and an outpatient clinic. Audition rotations are four weeks long, divided between each student's two preferred services.

On the inpatient mental health unit (MHU), auditioners can expect to work closely with both junior and senior residents, encountering cases ranging from severe depression to schizophrenia. Auditioners might be assigned a small caseload to follow and assist with medical decision-making. Small teaching pearls are interspersed throughout rounds, led by residents and inpatient faculty. Auditioners also have the option to shadow electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) sessions during a morning of their inpatient rotation; if ECT interests them, we encourage students to discuss this with their supervising resident and/or attending.

The consultation liaison service operates on the medical floors, handling cases such as those pending medical clearance (prior to transfer to the MHU), dementia with behavioral disturbances, somatic symptom disorders, and substance use cases. Here, auditioners learn to rule out or differentiate between organic causes of altered mental status and psychiatric pathology.

Psychiatry also operates within the emergency department (PES), where auditioners work closely with residents and attendings to manage high-acuity cases and determine the most appropriate level of care for each patient. The PES service assesses the appropriateness for admission to our mental health unit.

Our outpatient clinic is housed in a new Trinity Health building on the Schoolcraft campus (located off of 7 Mile and Haggerty Road). It features spacious offices on the 3rd floor, with large windows overlooking the interstate. Auditioners are encouraged to lead patient interviews under the guidance of their assigned resident. Residents will assist in selecting cases that align with the auditioner's interests.

At our facility, we use EPIC for our Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system. Each of our attendings is either board-certified or board-eligible in psychiatry. Our residency program is affiliated with Wayne State University. In addition to our weekly didactics at Trinity Health Livonia Hospital, outpatient clinic auditioners will have the opportunity to participate in psychodynamic case presentations on Fridays.

We offer 4-week rotations from August through January to students who are in good standing with their medical school and have passed COMLEX/USMLE Step 1 on their first attempt.
