Sports Medicine Track


Sports Medicine Track

Purpose:

To prepare Family Medicine residents for fellowship training in Sports Medicine through a dedicated longitudinal experience covering the breadth of Primary Care Sports Medicine.

Sports Medicine Experiences:

  • Event Coverage:

    • Live game coverage
      • Collegiate: Schoolcraft College Athletics
      • High School: Livonia Public Schools Athletics
        • Churchill High School
        • Stevenson High School
        • Franklin High School
      • Primary sports covered: Football, Hockey, Lacrosse
        • Additional sports available if interested: Basketball, Soccer, Track and Field, Volleyball, Baseball, Softball, and more
    • Preparticipation Exams
      • Yearly sports physical events at all 4 schools screening athletes for safe participation in sport
    • Heart Healthy Cardiac Screening
      • Yearly event held in partnership with Schoolcraft College and TrinityElite providing cardiac screening, including ECGs, for local high school athletes
  • Clinical:

    • Sports Medicine Rotation
      • In-house Sports Medicine Rotation with Dr. Stoddard
        • Treat Sports Medicine patients in our clinic with Dr. Stoddard
        • Work with sports physical therapists and athletic trainers at TrinityElite
        • Cover live sporting events
    • Audition Rotations
      • Scheduled rotations with Sports Medicine Fellowship programs early in PGY-3 to facilitate applications and interviews
    • Musculoskeletal Ultrasound
      • MSK ultrasound training sessions with Dr. Stoddard practicing diagnostic ultrasound, procedural techniques, and reviewing case studies
    • Osteopathic Manipulative treatment (OMT)
      • Interested residents will have the option to practice OMT with Dr. Anjali Nagar, DO.
  • Academic:

    • American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) Annual Meeting
      • National level meeting for Sports Medicine physicians
      • Track participants will author and present a case report during PGY-2 and PGY-3 year
      • May attend PGY-1 year if schedule permits
    • TrinityElite Sports Medicine Symposium
      • Yearly event featuring collaboration between Sports Medicine, Orthopedics, Physical Therapy, Athletic Training, Sports Nutrition, and Sports Psychology to discuss high-yield topics and provide continuing medical education for all participants.
    • Trinity Health Sports Medicine Journal Club
      • Held monthly via virtual meeting with Sports Medicine faculty, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and interested residents across Southeastern Michigan covering the AMSSM top-rated publications for the year
    • Pediatric Division Grand Rounds
      • Quarterly Sports Medicine topics presented during the Pediatric Division grand rounds by Trinity Health Sports Medicine Physicians
    • Family Medicine Residency Didactics
      • Monthly Sports Medicine topics presented by Dr. Stoddard during regular program didactics sessions

Track Prerequisites:

  • Must be in good standing with the program and meet all standards
  • Must demonstrate strong interest in Sports Medicine
  • Must plan to apply for fellowship

Timeline:

  • PGY-1
    • Participate in Sports Medicine opportunities as schedule permits
    • Express interest in Sports Medicine and track
    • Request to participate in track at end of year if interested and meeting all prerequisites
  • PGY-2
    • Participate in all Sports Medicine opportunities above as required and scheduled
    • May attend extra event coverage as desired to boost application
    • Start planning and scheduling audition rotations with program coordinator
    • Start prepping fellowship application
  • PGY-3
    • Complete audition rotations
    • Apply for fellowship and interview
    • Participate in the fellowship match
    • Continue participating in all Sports Medicine opportunities as required and scheduled.
  • Graduate and start fellowship!
