Why I chose this program/location for my training

I was drawn to Trinity Health Grand Rapids after experiencing an understanding and inclusive environment during interviews and socials. Seeing seniors from my medical school thrive there further reinforced my interest. Talking over my career goals with the faculty and seeing how supportive they were of my interests and future aspirations also made a lasting impression on me ultimately making it feel like the perfect place to train and continue learning.

Additionally, the beauty of Grand Rapids was definitely a plus for me, especially since I enjoy exploring nature and scenic areas.

Hobbies/what I do outside of work

Outside of medicine, I enjoy playing video games, watching thriller series and movies, playing badminton and cricket, and exploring beautiful landscapes. I’m also passionate about singing, occasionally turning road trips into mini karaoke sessions.

I chose Trinity Health Grand Rapids because of the people and the culture they create. Throughout the interview process, I was struck by how welcoming and supportive the residents and faculty were. It was clear that resident education is a priority and that the program fosters an environment where residents are encouraged to ask questions, challenge themselves, and grow into confident physicians. I was looking for a program that supported my career goals and valued teamwork, and I found that at Trinity.

Grand Rapids was an added bonus. I love being active and spending time outdoors, and the city offers a great balance between professional growth and life outside of work. The strong sense of community, access to nature, and welcoming atmosphere made it easy to picture myself building both my career and my life here.

Hobbies/what I do outside of work

Outside of medicine, I enjoy hiking, traveling and exploring new places. Whether it's finding a new trail, visiting a national park, or taking a spontaneous weekend trip, I love opportunities to get outdoors and experience something new. I also enjoy learning about different cultures and meeting people from diverse backgrounds. When I'm not exploring, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, volunteering and finding new adventures wherever I can.

Choosing Trinity Health Grand Rapids for residency came down to the people and the environment they create. During my sub-internship, the residents stood out immediately for how welcoming and supportive they were, making it easy to feel like part of the team. The attendings were equally impactful, consistently engaged in teaching and clearly invested in student growth in a way that felt genuine rather than expected. That culture was matched by the clinical experience.

Exposure to a wide range of pathology provided a strong foundation for learning, and it was clear that both patient care and resident education are true priorities within the program. That balance aligns closely with what I value in training. Just as meaningful is the opportunity to return to Grand Rapids. Training in a community that feels like home, while being supported by a program that prioritizes growth and collaboration, makes this an ideal place to continue developing as a physician.

Hobbies/what I do outside of work

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our dog, Stevie, whether that’s exploring local parks or finding new trails to hike. Grand Rapids is very dog friendly, which makes it easy to include Stevie in our day to day activities and find new areas to explore. I also enjoy quilting and sewing projects, which give me a creative outlet outside of medicine. Beyond that, I love watching and attending sporting events.

Trinity Health was my first audition rotation and the first draw to the program was how welcoming the other residents and attending physicians were. As an Army veteran, I value the connection of a great team and I felt a strong sense of camaraderie, which I loved. Furthermore, my fiancée’s family live in Cedar Springs and we wanted to move back to be close with them.

During my time off I love to collect and build Lego, along with playing golf. Trinity Health Grand Rapids instantly felt like home, and a big part of that was my conversation with Dr. Hull, our program director. Whether I wanted to pursue a particular fellowship or explore different avenues within internal medicine, I knew that the program would provide me with mentorship, guidance, resources, and encouragement. It's reassuring to know that I have such a strong support system backing me as I navigate my medical journey.

During my interview, I realized that this program valued its residents and put their health and well-being at the forefront. Everyone was genuine, kind, warm, and I felt more at home during my interview at this program than anywhere else, which was important to me. The city of Grand Rapids was appealing with its small town feel, character and ample greenery.

Hobbies/what I do outside of work

I enjoy CrossFit and working out, because I love pushing my body to the extreme and challenging myself physically and mentally. I love being at the beach, part-time resident, full-time mermaid! I also love hiking, biking, and playing sports.
