Why I chose this program/location for my training

Choosing Trinity Health Grand Rapids for residency came down to the people and the environment they create. During my sub-internship, the residents stood out immediately for how welcoming and supportive they were, making it easy to feel like part of the team. The attendings were equally impactful, consistently engaged in teaching and clearly invested in student growth in a way that felt genuine rather than expected. That culture was matched by the clinical experience.

Exposure to a wide range of pathology provided a strong foundation for learning, and it was clear that both patient care and resident education are true priorities within the program. That balance aligns closely with what I value in training. Just as meaningful is the opportunity to return to Grand Rapids. Training in a community that feels like home, while being supported by a program that prioritizes growth and collaboration, makes this an ideal place to continue developing as a physician.

Hobbies/what I do outside of work

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our dog, Stevie, whether that’s exploring local parks or finding new trails to hike. Grand Rapids is very dog friendly, which makes it easy to include Stevie in our day to day activities and find new areas to explore. I also enjoy quilting and sewing projects, which give me a creative outlet outside of medicine. Beyond that, I love watching and attending sporting events.

Why I chose this program/location for my training

Trinity Health was my first audition rotation and the first draw to the program was how welcoming the other residents and attending physicians were. As an Army veteran, I value the connection of a great team and I felt a strong sense of camaraderie, which I loved. Furthermore, my fiancée’s family live in Cedar Springs and we wanted to move back to be close with them.

Hobbies/what I do outside of work

During my time off I love to collect and build Lego, along with playing golf. I have always had a fascination for the outdoors where I enjoy hiking, rock climbing, and camping with my fiancée Brooke and our two dogs, Sammie and Stryker. Recently, I added a new hobby and love the process of making espresso. I also enjoy reading fantasy and mystery thriller novels.

From the faculty to the residents, everyone was extremely welcoming and engaging during my interview. The strong camaraderie among many residents who were present at the virtual social gathering was evident, even though I was not physically present. As a result, I was able to see that this program is like a family.

Additionally, listening to other residents express how happy they are being a part of this program and having no regrets matching here, reassured me that I would receive the support I need in my training and learning throughout my time here. I’m truly grateful to be here.

Trinity Health Grand Rapids instantly felt like home, and a big part of that was my conversation with Dr. Hull, our program director. Whether I wanted to pursue a particular fellowship or explore different avenues within internal medicine, I knew that the program would provide me with mentorship, guidance, resources, and encouragement. It's reassuring to know that I have such a strong support system backing me as I navigate my medical journey.

The sense of camaraderie that I noticed between residents also put me at ease and I am so excited for the friendships that I will make. Further, with my family just a few hours away in Canada, I couldn't imagine a better place to spend the next three years.

I chose this program because talking to the faculty was so comfortable. Dr Hull and I grew up around the same area so it was a great conversation about our hometowns. After talking to the current residents, it seemed like such a supportive place to work. I really saw myself working there.

The Grand Rapids area has always been so fun for me to visit, and will be a wonderful place to see my son grow up while I complete my training.
